That prompt includes numerical ANSI color codes as well as escape sequences for the user (u), host (h), and present working directory (W).For a detailed explanation of how this gibberish works, reference our post on colorizing your shell prompt in Linux.You will also want a chart of the xterm-256-compatible ANSI color codes. By default, when you open up a new Terminal window in Mac OS X the command prompt displays a relatively long name:
I prefer to shorten this to a simple dollar sign ($) in order to free up space.
- In this post, I will about Windows Command Line (CMD) and Mac OS Terminal Navigation Commands. Knowledge of CMD/Terminal commands may be needed for using command line interfaces (CLI) of applications where Graphical User Interface is missing, or when CLI provides a faster/easier way to perform a task. Let's see some of the commands.
- Find out your internal IP address by using Terminal. This method is easier and faster for Mac users who are familiar with a command line program called Terminal. Even if you have not used Terminal before, just follow the instructions and you will find the internal IP address. First, use spotlight by pressing Command and Spacebar and type Terminal.
- To log into your Mac on another Mac, execute the command: ssh -l username remote-address. Replace username with the username you'd use to log into OS X and remote-address with the IP address given to you in the Sharing pane. You can now control your Mac and execute Terminal commands remotely, a real plus.
- Open or quit Terminal on Mac. Each window in Terminal represents an instance of a shell process. The window contains a prompt that indicates you can enter a command. The prompt you see depends on your Terminal and shell preferences, but it often includes the name of the host you're logged in to, your current working folder, your user name.
To change your default command line prompt, follow these instructions:
1) Navigate to your home directory:
cd ~
2) Create a file called .bash_profile
vi .bash_profile
3) Add the following line (press i
)
export PS1='$ '
Get Windows Terminal - Microsoft Store
4) Save the file (press Escape
, type :wq
and hit Enter
)
Mac running programs. Whenyou are running Docker Desktop, you do not need Docker Machine nodes running locally (or anywhere else). With Docker Desktop, you have a new, nativevirtualization system running (HyperKit) which takes the place of theVirtualBox system. You have the option to copy containers and images from your local default machine (if one exists) to the Docker Desktop VM. To learn more, see.
5) Restart Terminal

There are other ways you can configure the command prompt (for example, showing the current time), but I prefer to keep it simple.
